I've always loved the TV show, but I never read the books as a kid. I don't know why, but I'm SO glad that I finally read one of the books and yes, I plan to read the rest. I loved learning about their daily lives in the 1870's, as hard as their lives were, it was just another day to them. Hunting, growing and prepping their food was a challenge and many tasks required the efforts of the entire family. They made EVERYTHING by hand and many things that we take for granted like butter, cheese and underwear. Having a run-in with wild animals was a regular occurrence and another story for Pa to tell to the kids. Sometimes Pa had to walk for miles to the general store in the bitter cold and snow to trade for goods. They were true survivors, but also a warm and loving family. I just love the values that the book teaches. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I'm such a kid at heart.
